Pop Music

Posted by evanduq on July 30, 2009

I guess there’s a lot to be said about pop music, but what about philosophy and pop music. I know that there are books out there about philosophy and pop music. I haven’t read any of them, but I’m thinking of speculating about the general philosophy of pop music. Here’s how I’m doing it: I have an “official” list of today’s top-40 hits and youtube. Youtube is about 100% reliable when it comes to finding any music you’re looking for. My first guess (if that’s what you want to call it) is that pop music has existed since the dawn of time. Maybe it established time itself. Pop rhythms for the general consumption as guide posts for civilization. Rhythmic ceremonial dance rituals! Ha! Doc Brown said something like this in Back to the Future. (Why no dancing during Mass? Wouldn’t it be more sanitary than shaking hands?) I guess pop music is by and large a means for getting human beings together for the purposes of having a good time, more or less. Right now I’m listening to Sean Kingston’s  “Fire Burning.” It sounds like a fun tune to be out on the dance floor to. What is the dance floor? It is a place. A place where dancing occurs. Thank you captain obvious. But is the dance floor anything more? It seems like a sacred place. It’s a place specifically reserved for listening to music and moving the body. Can any place be a dance floor? Even a vehicle? I wouldn’t want anybody driving and full blown driving at the same time, but I’m just suggesting a little less extreme . Different strokes for different folks, right?

Subscribing to yourself.

Posted by evanduq on July 30, 2009

This occured to me as I was strolling through the shopping mall earlier. As “real adults” we need to subscribe to ourselves. What do I mean? As many of you know, supporting yourself is not magic. A lot of work goes into it. (Unless you happen to be more priviliged than most. Then most of this might not apply to you.) We have to think, we have to take action in order to earn wages. These wages don’t just pile up. At least some of them have to be used to pay the bills. I guess different percentages and budgets can be set up where some goes into savings and some goes into making sure that the iPhone bill gets paid. What is essential? There is a lot of tech out there now a days. Things seem to be becoming more and more essential for keeping up with others. For instance, right now I have 7 internet windows running, and I’m actually broadcasting live video with chat on one of them! (www.justin.tv/philosophycat84) Justin.Tv, twitter, facebook, wordpress. These are the the channels I use to keep in touch with the world when I’m not actually out in the world. But what do I know. Someone subscribes to me. We all subscribe to each other. Money, cash-payment, is just one means to an end: getting what we want or need. I guess I just need to get out to the clubs more often. Well, there are no clubs ’round here. Word. Sorry if you were expecting something else and got this weird pseudo-rant instead. Just tryin’ to avoid ocd and anxiety tendencies.
